Windowshop in Gastown

Vancouver proper began in the heart of what is now a trendy neighborhood called Gastown, named after a historical figure known as “Gassy Jack”. Once Canada’s third largest city, “Gastown” in 1867, was the site of various lumber mills, Gastown is now home to chic loft apartments, European eateries, cocktail lounges and flashy boutiques. There are a few galleries of note along Water Street, and plenty of places to buy Canadiana.

The great thing about sightseeing in Vancouver is it’s easy to knock off multiple things in one visit to any of its unique neighborhoods. Vancouver’s Chinatown is one of the oldest in Canada and the largest. Perched on the edge of the Downtown Financial District and Gastown, Chinatown offers up an array of funky shops, inexpensive markets, and of course, the best Dim Sum restaurants in town. Sunday is the busiest day for Dim Sum, but also the best with multi-generational families sitting down and chatting about the week’s events.

Wonder at the Torre de Belém

If there is just one landmark you visit when touring through the Portuguese capital, make it this one. Soaring high above the seafront of the Lisbon quays, this great tower displays a veritable fusion of architectural styles from the Mudejar to the Moorish, the Gothic to the Romanesque. It has stood watch over the mouth of the Tagus River since its construction under the patronage of Saint John back in the 16th century. Since then, it has risen to become perhaps the most iconic feature of the city, famed as the last sight adventurers like the prodigal Vasco da Gama would have seen as they drifted out into the vast Atlantic Ocean.

What is it? Nicolau became a phenomenon when it opened in 2016. Due to the dog-sausage, with a bow around its neck and the velvet suit, that is the mascot of this Baixa’s restaurant. Why go? There isn’t a weekend during
 which Nicolau Lisboa gets 
ignored on Instagram. Some
 post what arrives on the 
table; others, the decor which 
resembles a London cafeteria 
with some Lx Factory touches. 
And the menu has a bit of
 everything trendy, such as
pancakes (the stars of the
 house), tapiocas, eggs benedict,
smoothies or yoghurt with
 granola. Go ahead and post that
